Fund Your Health (Part 2) by Dr. Lisa Williams

HEALTH PORTFOLIO (H-Portfolio)

Health = Wealth

H-Asset: Family Wealth

H-Investment: Emergency H-Fund

Here is another very wise H-Investment that improves your overall health and wealth. Here is my H=W (Health = Wealth) formula: In finance, there are emergency funds as well as discretionary funds. An emergency fund is an account that is needed in the event of a personal financial crisis, such as a debilitating illness, job loss, or other major expense. An individual sets this type of fund up and designates it as capital reserved for personal financial crisis. I have heard some financial advisors recommend that an emergency fund contain enough money to cover at least three to six months of living expenses. Others have suggested one year if you have a family. I know many people who only “fund” and “allocate” H-Expenses when they are in a health care crisis. Yes, it costs money, but look at the facts and figures and trends of health care spending:

Approximate annual spending in the United States:

Low back pain $100 to 200 billon

Anxiety $42 billion in direct medical costs

Skin cancer $81 billon and most cases are preventable

Heart disease $207 billion

Strokes $33 billion

I cannot express the importance of building an H-Portfolio that includes this important H-Investment. This is just one more way to pay your health forward by adding smart H-Investments to your and your family’s H-Portfolio. It is never too early or too late to invest in your health.
