Falls are very common and can occur in all age groups. Falls are the leading cause of injuries and deaths among older Americans. Children, ages 15 and younger, and young adults, ages of 15 to 29, have the second highest rates of morbidity. In 2014, 29 million falls occurred, which caused seven million injuries and an estimated $31 billion in Medicare costs (CDC, 2016; WHO, 2016). Falls may mean very expensive repairs, and I don’t want you to be a statistic!

Fall Prevention is another very wise H-Investment that improves your overall health and wealth. Here is my H=W (Health = Wealth) formula: As a licensed physical therapist, I am certain this H-Investment is worth every cent. Using sound H-Investments, like fall prevention, can reduce the number of unnecessary hospital trips, doctor visits, and/or medications.

What you can do to Fund Your Health:

Here are some suggestions for reducing the risk of falls:

  • Install safety gates at the top and bottom of staircases for children.
  • Secure dressers, changing tables, and highchairs using the preinstalled safety straps.
  • Use a nonslip bathmat.
  • Use handrails when walking up or down stairs.
  • Clean up wet floors immediately.
  • Keep stairways, entrances, and halls well lit. Install a nightlight with an automatic light switch that turns on when you get up in the middle of the night.
  • Keep all rugs anchored and smooth.
  • Keep cords and wires out of walkways.
  • Avoid wearing socks only. Wear shoes and slippers that have non-skid soles.

Preventive measures may also include particular activities that enhance balance and awareness in order to prevent falls, like Tai Chi, or yoga that can also enhance bone density to prevent osteoporosis. Maintaining and improving balance, muscle strength, and coordination is also critical in preventing falls. Unfortunately, many individuals are at risk for falls regardless of preventative measures. For these individuals, recognizing their risk factors is instrumental in preventing falls. Fear can also be a strong factor because of lack of knowledge, fear of future fractures, and fear of falling.

Preventing illnesses before they begin and preventing infections when you are being treated can positively impact your overall health and wealth—even save your life. Such measures could save nearly two million lives and nearly $4 billion dollars a year!
